So, what is screen printing exactly? Screen printing (traditionally called silkscreen printing) is a printing technique where a mesh is used to transfer ink or dye onto a substrate, except in the areas blocked by a stencil. A substrate is simply the base material on which images/designs will be printed, and the stencil blocks ink from being printed onto certain areas creating the design.
The process begins with ink and a blade or squeegee. Using the squeegee, you move the ink across the screen to fill the mesh openings and use a reverse stroke causing the screen to touch the substrate briefly along a line of contact. Thus causing the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh openings as the screen springs back after the blade has passed. Only one color is printed at a time, so several screens are used to produce multi-colored images and designs.
